Cops, Robbers, Thieves and Security

November 12, 2007

Day One, Update Two

Back from T5 and spirits are high, unfortunately no cameras were allowed. That said it is as impressive as the media has reported. Some of the statistics are staggering. The terminal has a air of a modern elegant shopping mall. Lots of questions were asked about biometrics systems, CCTV, aggregation of data, behaviour profiling and up and down stream systems for data.

Once we arrived we were all issued with VIP passes, and guided into the departure lounge. The departure lounge is a vast chasm that holds both departures and arrivals under the same roof. Moving through the security check points into the main departure areas and the amount of retail outlets is astounding, a shopper’s duty free paradise.

Lots of questions were asked about biometrics systems, CCTV, aggregation of data, behaviour profiling and up and down stream systems for data.  The tension between security and openness is, to my mind not as apparent, say for example in other British airports, a big thumbs up BAA.

Thanks

Paul
